The Coolant systems on BMW’s are very sensitive to fluid level. Your coolant warning light may come on when the system is down only a cup or two of fluid. BMW coolant is best, but adding no more than a cup of water will also do the trick until you can come in for the real deal. Be sure to wait until the system has cooled down prior to topping it off!
