Crossover SUVs lift BMW sales 11.2% for best March ever

The BMW Group (BMW and Mini combined) reported that March sales improved a strong 11.2% from a year earlier, boosted by crossover SUVs.

For the first quarter, BMW Group is up 4.3%.

"March roared out like a lion giving BMW even better numbers than the previous record set in 2007," said Ludwig Willisch, President and CEO, BMW of North America.

"The arrival this month of the new 320i at a very attractive price plus the changeover to the 2014 models will further accelerate our momentum in the months ahead," he said.

The entire 3-Series line, which is BMW's best-seller in the U.S., was down 10.5% The only cars that notched sales gains were the Z4 sports car and the 6-Series. That was enough to push car sales up 5.6%.

The crossover SUVs -- X3, X5 and X6 combined -- were up 40%, as each model enjoyed substantial gains.

Mini Roadster and Countryman were up, but all other versions fell, leaving the Mini brand with a modest 3.5% gain.
